Creative Ways To Use Wooden Storage Crates

At first glance, you may not think that a basic wooden storage crate has much use, but it has a lot of hidden potential. If you received a shipment of something in one of the crates, hold on to the crate rather than throw it away or recycle it. With a little creativity and a few craft supplies, you can transform the wooden storage crate into one-of-a-kind home decor.

There are many ways that you can use a custom wooden storage crate, including as a storage option. The personalized piece will be both decorative and functional when placed in any room in your home. The crate will stand out among sterile, mass-produced shelves and storage bins.

Here are some out-of-the-box ways of putting a wood crate to good use around your house:

1. Record Storage

If you have a record player and prefer listening to your music the "old-school" way, a wood crate is an artsy way of storing all of your records. The crates are typically the ideal width and depth for holding records, so you'll just need to customize it to blend with your home decor.

If you want a rustic look, you can just leave the wood crate as is, or you can paint it if you want to add a pop of color to a space. To do so, take it to a well-ventilated area and cover it with two coats of spray paint in the hue of your choice.

2. Wall Shelves

Another useful and decorative way to re-purpose the crates is as wall shelves. After painting them in the color you desire, simply hang them on a bedroom or living room wall, open side out, and use them to hold anything from picture frames and candles to folder files. Hang a set of three crates in a straight line, or mix it up with several different-sized crates in a random grouping.

You can also hang them on a bathroom wall as extra towel or toiletry storage if closet space is limited.

3. Planter Boxes

During the spring and summer months, fill the crates with dirt and flowers or herb plants as mini gardens. They will be especially handy if you don't have an outdoor space and want to grow some greenery on an apartment patio or balcony.

Plant-filled crates also make thoughtful and creative gifts for any occasion, such as birthdays, holidays, wedding and bridal showers, and housewarming parties.
